Excuses

I made up an excuse when I was late to work on my second day on a new job. I was to be introduced at the weekly staff meeting but I was delayed when I found that someone had broken into my car that morning.  Turns out the new office was somewhat hostile to newcomers. Even though it she was interrupting another staff person's presentation, a woman stood up, pointed at me, and exclaimed "You're late".   I looked the woman in the eye and thinking quickly said, "I was having an argument with myself about something and I couldn't leave the house until I got in the last word."

She blinked, mouth ajar and considered whether or not she thought I was sane. Then she looked around to see that everyone was laughing at her and sat down.
